Have you seriously wondered why our work and careers take the top spot over everything thing else in our lives and can be a huge factor in relation to our mental health? The reason isn’t far-fetched; because we desire to succeed in our careers and in whatever profession we are involved in, we are naturally inclined to push everything else behind.

We have curated and explained a few tips below that you might find quite helpful in your quest to ensure a better work-life balance.

  1. Always prioritize your time

As someone who has always taken my career over anything else over the years, I have learnt the value of always prioritize your time. There are 2r4 hours in a day and the truth is you won’t get more than that! We are always complaining that we don’t have enough time to get things done every day but the real problem here is the inability to effectively manage our 24 hours.

You need to determine what works for you in particular, if it’s a journal, if it’s a calendar, note pad that clearly states your priorities for the day and how you intend to properly manage your time, then you are certainly going to make some head way. Prioritize your time for all typical activities you tend to do every day; activities such as meetings, work calls and emails, checking up on family and loved ones, going on an early morning run etc.

For example, I currently run a blog for Nigeria’s top Jobs in Nigeria website as well as posting relevant Business and informative articles on the number one classifieds ads platform in Nigeria and I must say, I have been able to learn how to balance my time effectively while also ensuring my work deliverables as well as time for other things don’t suffer.

  1. Play to your strengths

I always say this all the time; learn to play to your strengths as there is no such thing as a perfect person. Often times, we are always trying hard to be perfect in all we do and how we apply ourselves to those things. However, I have always believed it’s best to channel that energy instead into one’s strengths. When you are able to do this, you realize you have a better perspective on things and it helps you greatly to find a proper work-life balance at all times.

  1. Have set work hours and stick to them

Whether you are an entrepreneur or you work for an organization, the need to have set work hours can’t be overemphasized. As much as there is need to deliver all the time which sometimes sees the need to work long hours, there is also the need to avoid burn out.

Our bodies are wired in different ways, and you realize if you are unable to unplug and just shut everything down as at when due, you risk not been productive. In this instance, lack of productivity affects how you are then able to deliver on your expectations.

When it is time to leave the office, leave and don’t start worrying or agonizing over your deliverables. The reality is work will still be waiting for you the next day. It is therefore important to have that set time for work and use whatever available time left to properly decompress.

  1. Do what you love

When you do what you love, life can be easier! Doing what you love can certainly help you create a better work – life balance as you would always have the needed motivation to keep going. Accept that there is a necessary need to work on a job, work in an industry that you love and regularly see the need not only to be part of, but contribute in a productive manner all the time as well.

  1. Always plan Personal/Family time

I also can’t over emphasize this enough. Plan your personal time properly; whether it’s a personal time for yourself or your family need, you need to create that balance all the time.  Your job might be important but it doesn’t have to be your entire life. There are far more important things in life than a job; your family is one.

Learn to make time for family, make time for those activities and hobbies that make you happy too. Again, the need for this cannot be overemphasized.
