MTN Scholarship
Scholarship for students are not only meant to appreciate good and dedicated students across the different levels of our educational institution, it is also meant to alleviate the hardship and struggles of some students and their parents by providing some sort of financial assistance that will cover their tuition fees. Across all part of the globe scholarship opportunities for deserving students has become a major feature of our educational institution.
Within the Nigerian educational experience, there are various types of scholarship which are available for students studying in the country. From the local scholarships to national which are majorly made of the Federal government scholarship which is usually given out to students in the secondary schools, we also have undergraduate students, post-graduate students and other categories of students in Nigeria. We also have foreign based scholarships which are always made open at one point or the other for all Nigerian Students. For the Nigerian Students, there are various examples of scholarship; among them are the Commonwealth Scholarship, Chevening Scholarship and other international scholarship. We also have the MTN Scholarship which is open to all Nigerians.
However before we take a full dig at the MTN Scholarship, let us take a quick dig at the various benefits that comes with scholarship opportunities for all Nigerian students.
Benefits of Scholarship Opportunities in Nigeria
- Scholarships help to lessen the impact of rising tuition costs.
Tuition is on the rise nation-wide and scholarships give access to higher education for students of all income levels.
- Scholarships help students have more time to focus on their studies.
Research shows that work can take up more than 15 hours per week and becomes an impediment to academic success. For many students the stresses of working make it difficult for them to graduate on time, or graduate with the high grades they have the potential to achieve. For other students, the work/study life is unsustainable, and they discontinue their studies all together. Scholarships decrease the number and amount of loans students need to take to complete higher education.
- Scholarships add to federal and state financial assistance.
Many students do not qualify for federal aid as federal policy has long been focused on access for low-income students. States and colleges have become increasingly focused on getting high-income, high-achieving students to attend their institutions or to remain in-state.
- Scholarships can fill the gap.
Scholarship assistance can support students who fall in the gap between high and low income levels — students who may not qualify for a need based scholarship and who do not meet the criteria for a merit based scholarship.
- Scholarships teach philanthropy.
By being the student recipient of a scholarship, it is hoped that the students will become philanthropic themselves and “give back” when they are financially able
MTN Scholarship
The MTN scholarship a known by many is not just a platform which is geared towards communal development and growth by focusing on the Youth through Educational growth, it is also a platform employed by the telecommunication giant to give back to the Nigerian community who has given them an enabling environment for their business to thrive in Nigeria. The Nigerian people have always enjoyed the give-back programs of the telecommunication company since they started showing interest in the vast unharnessed talents and skills in Nigeria.
However it is not the first of its kind in Nigeria. Meanwhile there a couple of other organizations from the oil and gas sector, which show interest in scholarships and other academic funding programs for young Nigerians. This call intends to reach other organizations that thrive in the Nigerian soil, to emulate the traits of community inclusion in their financial policies; for the sake of the developing nation.
A lot of Nigerian students have over the years benefitted immensely from this platform crated by MTN to reach out to Nigerian students, helping them to explore the various possibilities within the Educational world. MTN Scholarship is just a continuation of the opportunistic platforms for exceptional and committed students who need funds to continue their studies; but not first in the series.
It is also worthy to note that the MTN foundation has also reached out to Nigerians through other amazing platforms which has given youths in Nigeria to explore their creativity, by harnessing their potentials and also giving them a platform to showcase their inhibit talents to the world. Popular among these various arrays of programs is the MTN Y’ello Reality show which is similar to the famous African musical talent show known as MTN Project fame. These adventures, and more, have cost the company billions on Naira as they fund dreams from various parts of the world.
It has graced the pages of history that the MTN project fame was the platform that gave thousands of Nigerian musicians hope to and the life they live today, in the industry-with countless multi-million endorsement deals. As a review team, we don’t just consider MTN a brand, but a human-focused brand that feels justified funding people who genuinely deserve them
MTN Scholarship
The MTN Scholarship Scheme is an annual scholarship award that seeks to recognize and reward qualified high performing students. It is made up of the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme (MTN STSS) and the MTN Scholarship Scheme for Blind Students (MTN SSBS). Both Scholarships under the Youth Empowerment Cause, are currently in their 9th and 7th phase respectively.
Under both scholarships, eligible 300 level students studying Science & Technology related courses and blind students studying in Public Tertiary Institutions (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education) across Nigeria are awarded scholarships worth N200,000.00 annually till graduation as long as they maintain the required grades.
Over 3,000 Scholarships:
Since the scheme began 10 years ago, there have been 3,829 students who can boast that they are scholars under the scheme!
That’s a lot of money and a lot of people. Many would have received the award multiple times during their educational journey.
There Is More:
As it turns out, the company also organizes entrepreneurship and employability workshops to boost and assist the scholars as a way of preparing them for post-graduation life. In February 2020, MTN Foundation kicked off the Youth Development Programme, YEDP, where over 50 young graduates from the schemes pitched their business plans for a chance to receive a million Naira for their business!
