The Top 5 Questions to Ask in an Interview in 2021

As a job seeker you might be caught in the web when you’re asked to ask a question during an interview, in fact, some young people think they do not have the right to ask questions in an interview, it should be the interviewer doing the asking and they doing the answering, whereas things have evolved in various industries, Human Resource Managers have come to realize that employees have a thousand and one questions to ask even at the point of being interviewed and failure to get these questions answered affects the output of the employee during work.

Gone are the days when an interview used to be all about the interviewer, nowadays, an Interview is two-way communication between the interviewer and the interviewee, so as a job seeker, you do have the right to ask questions. Moreover, this is an organization you intend to spend an average of 9-hours of your daily life with, so why shouldn’t you know all that there is to know about the organization.

However, you have to be careful with the kind of questions you ask so you don’t end up blowing your chance of getting the job off. Here are the basic Dos and Don’ts of asking questions during interviews:

  1. Do not ask personal questions to any of the interviewers
  2. Do not ask ” what does this company do?” You ought to have done your research.
  3. Avoid close-ended questions, ask questions that will speak a conversation.
  4. Ask one question at a time. Don’t be tempted to ask all of the questions on your mind, take it slowly.
  5. Ask questions about multiple topics.
  6. Don’t ask outrightly if you got the job or not.

After following these rules, what then are the questions you should ask?

  1. How would you measure the success of the person in this position?

It shows that you are seeking to know what the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of the role are and how they are measured. It also portrays you as a candidate who is interested in the growth of the company and wants to contribute to it. Only a person who thirsts for success would ask how success is measured. Asking this question would also help you to understand what the expectation of the recruiter is and help you draft how to meet up or even surpass the expectation should you eventually get the job.

  1. What are some of the challenges you expect the person in this position to face?

Often times, job seekers do not want to ask this question because they think that are equipped enough or have taken up similar roles before and so are familiar with the challenges, other reason could be they do not want to seem weak before the recruiter. All of these are not true.

Different organizations have their different styles of operation and most definitely different challenges, even if you have taken up a similar role, this is a different organization from where you have previously worked, and not being aware of the challenges ahead might just be you digging up a hole for yourself.

Asking this question does not also portray you as weak but as someone who is ready to face challenges squarely.

So, getting a heads up about the likely challenges you will face in the role will make you better prepared at handling them should you eventually get the job.

  1. Are there opportunities for professional development? If so, what do those look like?

Many employees get a job and forget that they once had goals and dreams to achieve in their career, they remain as they were when they get the job, with little or no improvement from them, the employer eases them of their duty and they end up jobless with no organization to take them back because they are far away from the trend. Employees forget to upskill themselves while at the job and they fade away with time.

Asking this question provides you with knowledge of what the organization has in stock for its employees regarding seminars, training, conferences, and other professional development methods, it also lets you know if this is an organization you want to be with.

Every job seeker should run away from any organization which doesn’t provide positive answers to this question. It simply shows that you are going there to give your knowledge and get no better in return.

However, employees have also expressed concerns regarding this, some say they spend money on training their employees who end up resigning from the organization within months, it’s quite sad that this happens and only goes to show how ungrateful some persons can be. To curb this occurrence, a signed agreement is advised, where the employee signs to remain with the organization to put what he or she has learned to work for a specific period of time before leaving.

  1. What are you hoping this person will accomplish in their first six months and first year?

As earlier explained, this question will also make you privy to what is expected from you should you get the role within this timeline and you sure wouldn’t want to deliver less than expected.

  1. How would you describe a typical day in this position?

For a job where you will spend an averagely of 9-hours of your life, you definitely want to know what your hours at the job will seem like. Would you be attending to mails all through? Going from one office to another? Sourcing for news and information? You do want to know what a day at work will look like for you.

  1. Another very important question to ask is, what is your timeline for a response?

There have been cases of job seekers waiting for months with no response from the interviewer, they then reach out only to be told that the job has been awarded to someone else. Knowing the timeline of response will keep you from waiting for too long as against the “we will get back to you” response that interviewers are quick to give.
