Job Description

Role Overview

The Head of Operations will provide strategic and hands-on leadership across port operations, freight management (air & sea), and end-to-end logistics execution. The ideal candidate must possess a strong blend of field experience and managerial capability, with a proven track record of delivering results in a dynamic logistics environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee end-to-end clearing, forwarding, and logistics operations
  • Ensure timely cargo clearance and delivery across ports and terminals
  • Drive operational efficiency and minimize delays, demurrage, and costs
  • Manage relationships with customs authorities, port officials, shipping lines, and terminal operators
  • Supervise and coordinate teams of clearing agents, drivers, and logistics personnel
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Ensure full compliance with Nigerian import/export regulations
  • Provide operational reporting, forecasting, and performance tracking
  • Handle escalations and resolve complex operational challenges effectively

Required Experience & Competence

  • Clearing & Forwarding Experience (3–7+ Years)
  • Hands-on experience managing import/export shipments
  • Proven track record in clearing goods through Nigerian ports (Apapa, Tin Can, airports, etc.)
  • Strong experience with:
    • Form M
    • PAAR
    • SONCAP
    • NAFDAC permits
  • Direct engagement with customs officers and port authorities

Port & Logistics Operations

  • Experience coordinating cargo movement from port to warehouse/final destination
  • Management of transportation, trucks, drivers, and delivery schedules
  • Strong understanding of port challenges (congestion, delays, demurrage mitigation)
  • Experience working with shipping lines and terminal operators

Leadership & Management Experience (2–5+ Years)

  • Proven ability to lead and manage operational teams
  • Experience in assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring accountability
  • Ability to train and develop junior staff

Client & Stakeholder Management

Strong client engagement and communication skills

  • Ability to manage expectations and resolve issues professionally
  • Track record of maintaining long-term client relationships

Documentation & Compliance

  • Expertise in preparing and reviewing shipping and customs documentation
  • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance requirements
  • Ability to prevent penalties, delays, and operational risks

Financial & Cost Management

  • Experience in cost estimation for clearing and logistics operations
  • Strong negotiation skills with transporters and service providers
  • Ability to optimize cost without compromising service delivery

Problem-Solving & Decision-Making

Demonstrated ability to resolve real-time operational issues, including:

  • Customs queries
  • Documentation gaps
  • Cargo delays or damage
  • Strong analytical and decision-making capability under pressure

Requirements

Technical & System Knowledge

Working knowledge of:

  • NICIS (Nigeria Customs System)
  • Logistics/clearing software
  • Microsoft Excel for reporting and tracking

Additional Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of International Freight (Air & Sea)
  • Sound understanding of Incoterms
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline (mandatory)
  • Relevant professional certifications are an added advantage
